1941

Dr. Rich is born in Newton, Kansas to Eldon Stahly and Margaret Joy Rich.

1962

Dr. Rich earns a Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College and Conservatory.

1966

Dr. Rich earns a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Kansas and begins a residency in internal medicine in Seattle, Washington.

1968

Dr. Rich becomes a clinical associate and then chief clinical associate and senior staff fellow of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

1971

Dr. Rich serves as a research associate at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, which is later followed by an appointment as an assistant in medicine at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now Brigham and Women’s Hospital).

1973

Dr. Rich becomes an assistant and then associate professor of microbiology, immunology, and internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

1974

Dr. Rich marries Susan Jepsen Solliday and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Allergy and Immunology.

1977

Dr. Rich is appointed investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

1978

Dr. Rich is appointed full professor and head of the Immunology Section at Baylor College of Medicine.

1990

Dr. Rich is appointed vice president and dean of research at Baylor College of Medicine.

1991

Dr. Rich is appointed chairman of the board of directors of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology.

1995

Dr. Rich becomes a Distinguished Service Professor at Baylor College of Medicine.

1996

Dr. Rich is appointed Editor-in-Chief of the first edition of Clinical Immunology: Principles and Practice, the fifth edition of which was published in 2019.

1998

Dr. Rich is appointed executive associate dean and professor of medicine and microbiology/immunology at the Emory University School of Medicine.

2001

Dr. Rich is elected president and chairman of the board of directors of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB).

2003

Dr. Rich is appointed Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Immunology.

2004

Dr. Rich is appointed senior vice president for medicine and dean of the School of Medicine and professor of medicine and microbiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

2008

Dr. Rich receives the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Immunologists.

2012

Dr. Rich receives the Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

2017

Dr. Rich is named Dean and Professor Emeritus at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
