A Timeline of Professional Milestones

1951

Dr. Gyekenyesi immigrates to the United States. He is originally from Hungary and spent six years in Austria.

1957

Dr. Gyekenyesi becomes a naturalized citizen of the United States. He graduates from Cleveland’s Benedictine High School as Class Valedictorian.

1961

Dr. Gyekenyesi receives a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve University), where he serves as soccer team captain and leading scorer, receiving many awards. He was also recognized as an Outstanding Student.

1961

Dr. Gyekenyesi becomes a test engineer at the Ohio Crankshaft Company in Cleveland, Ohio.

1962

Dr. Gyekenyesi becomes a registered professional engineer in the state of Ohio.

1962

Dr. Gyekenyesi becomes a design engineer in the Design Division of the NASA Glenn Research Center (formerly Lewis Research Center) in Cleveland, Ohio.

1966

Dr. Gyekenyesi receives a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Case Institute of Technology.

1972

Dr. Gyekenyesi receives a Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanics from Michigan State University.

1983

Dr. Gyekenyesi is selected to lead the Structural Life Analysis Section of the Lewis Center’s Structures Research Division.

1989

Dr. Gyekenyesi is selected to lead the Structural Integrity Branch of the Lewis Center’s Structures Research Division.

1992

Dr. Gyekenyesi is elected president of the Ohio Soccer Association North after playing and leading teams and leagues for 35 years.

1993

Dr. Gyekenyesi is selected to head an enlarged Structural Life Prediction Branch, focused on research in solid mechanics, fatigue, fracture, creep rupture, and non-destructive evaluation for aerospace materials.

1994

Dr. Gyekenyesi receives the Excellence in Technology Transfer Award from the Consortium of Federal Laboratories.

1995

Dr. Gyekenyesi receives NASA’s first Software of the Year Award for developing the CARES computer program to predict the durability of Ceramic Engine Components.

1996

Dr. Gyekenyesi receives the Excellence in Engineering Award from NASA.

1997

Dr. Gyekenyesi receives the Best Paper in Ceramics Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

2006

Dr. Gyekenyesi becomes a senior engineer in the Structures and Materials Division of the NASA Glenn Research Center and is appointed to the agency wide NASA Safety Committee.

2007

Dr. Gyekenyesi becomes an adjunct professor in mechanics at Cleveland State University.

2007

Dr. Gyekenyesi is inducted into the U.S. Adult Soccer Association Hall of Fame in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

2013

Dr. Gyekenyesi receives NASA’s Distinguished Service Medal and retires from active service at the Glenn Research Center.
