Dr. Zwaan is born in Gorinchem, Netherlands to Johan Thomas Zwaan and Johanna De Kok.

1960

Dr. Zwaan receives a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Amsterdam.

1960

Dr. Zwaan receives a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Amsterdam.

1963

Dr. Zwaan immigrates to the United States and becomes a Postdoctoral Research Fellow of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

1963

Dr. Zwaan receives a grant from the National Science Foundation.

1964

Dr. Zwaan becomes an associate professor of anatomy at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia.

1966

Dr. Zwaan receives a the first of several grants from Fight for Sight. He later receives a grant from the National Institutes of Health in 1968.

1971

Dr. Zwaan becomes an associate professor of anatomy, and later ophthalmology, at the Harvard University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts.

1972

Dr. Zwaan receives the Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health.

1973

Dr. Zwaan becomes a member of Study Section A (Ophthalmology) of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

1981

Dr. Zwaan is certified as a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.

1982

Dr. Zwaan joins the U.S. Army Reserve as Major MC, advancing to Colonel MC in 1986.

1983

Dr. Zwaan becomes a life member of the Reserve Officers Association and the Association of Military Surgeons.

1988

Dr. Zwaan authors and edits a section of the book, “Ambulatory Pediatric Care” (Ophthalmology).

1989

Dr. Zwaan becomes a full professor of ophthalmology, cellular biology, and pediatrics at the University of Texas School of Medicine in San Antonio, Texas.

1992

Dr. Zwaan becomes a member of the advisory board of the Prevention Blindness Foundation in San Antonio, Texas.

1992

Dr. Zwaan authors and co-edits the first edition of “Decision Making in Ophthalmology.”

1994

Dr. Zwaan becomes a senior academy consultant in ophthalmology at King Khalid Eye Specialists Hospital in Saudi Arabia.

1996

Dr. Zwaan becomes a clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of Texas School of Medicine.

1996

Dr. Zwaan serves as a senior examiner for the Arab Board of Ophthalmology in Damascus, Syria.
