Dr. Kern is born in Middletown, Ohio to Charles Albert and Charme Kern.

1957

Dr. Kern receives a Bachelor of Science from the Carnegie Institute of Technology.

1961

Dr. Kern receives a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Minnesota.

1961

Dr. Kern becomes a postdoctoral fellow in chemical physics at Columbia University.

1962

Dr. Kern becomes a staff member of the IBM Watson Laboratory at Columbia University.

1964

Dr. Kern becomes an assistant professor of chemistry at Stony Brook University.

1966

Dr. Kern becomes an adjunct associate professor of chemistry at Ohio State University.

1966

Dr. Kern becomes a research scientist at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio.

1971

Dr. Kern becomes an adjunct professor of chemistry at Ohio State University.

1972

Dr. Kern is appointed academy vice chairman of the Department of Chemistry at Ohio State University.

1972

Dr. Kern becomes manager of the Chemical Physics Section of the Battelle Memorial Institute.

1973

Dr. Kern becomes an institute scientist and serves as director of the physical science program at the Battelle Memorial Institute.

1976

Dr. Kern becomes a full-time professor in chemistry at Ohio State University.

1978

Dr. Kern becomes program director of theoretical chemical physics in the Division of Chemistry at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C.

1980

Dr. Kern becomes a senior staff associate and Computer Science Research Network Project Director in the Division of Mathematics and Computer Science at the National Science Foundation.

1983

Dr. Kern becomes program director of structural chemistry and thermodynamics and acting section head of physical chemistry and chemical dynamics at the National Science Foundation.

1985

Dr. Kern becomes deputy director of the Division of Chemistry at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C.

1986

Dr. Kern becomes assistant director of general science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy for the Office of the President. He also appointed dean of the College of Mathematics and Physical Sciences at Ohio State University.

1992

Dr. Kern becomes a professor in chemistry, vice president of research and dean of the graduate school at Northwestern University.

1998

Dr. Kern becomes Professor Emeritus at Northwestern University.
