A Timeline of Professional Milestones

1942

Dr. Naugle is born in Mitchell, Indiana to Durward Clinton and Martha May Naugle.

1963

Dr. Naugle marries Gretchen Rohn.

1964

Dr. Naugle receives a Bachelor of Arts in American government and politics from Purdue University.

1966

Dr. Naugle receives a Master of Arts in American history from Purdue University and becomes an instructor of history at Nebraska Wesleyan University.

1971

Dr. Naugle is promoted to assistant professor at Nebraska Wesleyan University.

1976

Dr. Naugle receives a Doctor of Philosophy in American studies from the University of Kansas.

1980

Dr. Naugle is named Huge-Kinne Endowed Professor and Chair of the History Department at Nebraska Wesleyan University.

1985

Dr. Naugle is appointed Nebraska State Coordinator for National History Day and representative of the Mountain-Plains’ states on the National History Day’s Executive Council of State Coordinators.

1991

Dr. Naugle serves as director of the Nebraska Summer Institute for High School History and Social Studies Teachers. Also, along with his co-editor, he receives the Frost Prize from the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution for the book, “Nebraska Quilts and Quiltmakers.”

1998

Dr. Naugle receives the Addison E. Sheldon Award from the Nebraska Historical Society.

1999

Dr. Naugle is appointed director of the Wesleyan Honors Academy, focusing on dual and concurrent education for advanced history students.

2001

Dr. Naugle is elected by the National Association of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) as a representative for four-year private colleges and universities.

2002

Dr. Naugle is appointed Chair of the Historical Studies Graduate program, funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Education’s Teaching American History Grant program.

2003

Dr. Naugle receives the Nebraska Sower Award from the Nebraska Humanities Program (now Humanities Nebraska) and is appointed to the Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission by the governor.

2003

Dr. Naugle retires from Nebraska Wesleyan University and receives the title of Professor Emeritus of History.

2004

Dr. Naugle serves as President of the Nebraska State Council of History Education and is made a member of The National Council of History Education.

2005

Dr. Naugle serves as president of the Nebraska States Council of History Education.

2014

Dr. Naugle receives an award for the best reference book in Nebraska from the Nebraska Center for the Book for “History of Nebraska, 4th ed.”

2015

Dr. Naugle is appointed chairman of the Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission.

2017

Dr. Naugle is honored with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and is named a Distinguished Humanitarian by Marquis Who’s Who.
