Dr. Smiley is born in Columbia City, Indiana to Orla Raymond Smiley and Mary Jane Smiley.
1954
Dr. Smiley earns a Bachelor of Science from Ball State University.
1954
Dr. Smiley becomes a public school teacher in Logansport, Indiana.
1958
Dr. Smiley receives a Master of Music from Northwestern University.
1959
Dr. Smiley earns a certification from Ecoles d’Art Americaines in Fontainebleau, France.
1961
Dr. Smiley joins the music department faculty at the State University of New York at Oswego.
1968
Dr. Smiley serves as music chairperson of the New York chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.
1970
Dr. Smiley completes her studies at the University of Illinois, earning a PhD.
1971
Dr. Smiley becomes an honorary fellow with the State University of New York Research Foundation.
1973
Dr. Smiley receives the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.
1974
Dr. Smiley earns the title of Distinguished Teaching Professor at the State University of New York at Oswego.
1975
Dr. Smiley becomes chairman of the New York chapter of the American Musical Society.
1976
Dr. Smiley becomes chairperson of the music department at the State University of New York at Oswego.

Dr. Smiley joins the Oswego Orchestra Society.
1984
Dr. Smiley serves as president of the Oswego branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

Dr. Smiley joins the Penfield Library Associates.

Dr. Smiley receives a grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities.

Dr. Smiley serves as president of the board of directors of the Oswego Opera Theater.
2014
Dr. Smiley earns the title of Professor Emeritus at the State University of New York at Oswego.

Dr. Smiley is awarded the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who’s Who.
