A Timeline of Professional Milestones

1942

Dr. Hammon is born in Springfield, Missouri.

1964

Dr. Hammon receives a Bachelor of Arts from Drury College (now Drury University).

1968

Dr. Hammon receives a Doctor of Medicine from the Tulane University School of Medicine and begins a medical internship at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.

1969

Dr. Hammon begins a residency at Duke University Medical Center.

1970

Dr. Hammon serves as a Lieutenant and Commander in the U.S. Naval Hospital.

1972

Dr. Hammon begins a residency in general and thoracic surgery at Duke University Medical Center.

1977

Dr. Hammon serves as a teaching scholar in cardiac surgery at Duke University Medical Center.

1978

Dr. Hammon is certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Surgery and becomes an assistant professor of surgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

1979

Dr. Hammon becomes the principal investigator of the National Institutes of Health Grants.

1983

Dr. Hammon is promoted to associate professor of surgery at Vanderbilt University.

1985

Dr. Hammon receives the President’s Award for Best Scientific Paper from the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association.

1987

Dr. Hammon is appointed chief of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Nashville.

1989

Dr. Hammon is promoted to full professor in the Department of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at Vanderbilt University.

1991

Dr. Hammon is appointed a Howard Holt Bradshaw Professor and chairman of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine (now the Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education) at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

1995

Dr. Hammon becomes professor of surgery at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem.

2001

Dr. Hammon receives the Distinguished Alumni Award from Drury College.

2008

Dr. Hammon is certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is also appointed president of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association.

2009

Dr. Hammon is named Professor Emeritus of surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He also joins the Cardiac Devices Panel of the Federal Drug Administration.

2017

Dr. Hammon is honored with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who’s Who.

2018

Dr. Hammon receives the 50 Year Lifetime Achievement Award from Tulane Medical School.
