1928

Dr. Mitchell is born in Longview, Texas to William and Dorthea Mitchell.

1950

Dr. Mitchell graduates with honors from the Virginia Military Institute, receiving a Bachelor of Science.

1954

Dr. Mitchell receives a Doctor of Medicine from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and begins a medical internship with the Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas, Texas.

1956

Dr. Mitchell receives a cardiology fellowship at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

1958

Dr. Mitchell begins his career in public health service at the Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.

1962

Dr. Mitchell becomes an assistant professor of medicine and physiology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

1963

Dr. Mitchell becomes an attending physician with the Parkland Health & Hospital System.

1966

Dr. Mitchell is promoted to associate professor, becomes the director of the Weinberger Laboratory for Cardiopulmonary Research, and becomes an attending physician at the Saint Paul Family Medical Center.

1968

Dr. Mitchell receives the Career Development Award from the U.S. Public Health Service.

1969

Dr. Mitchell is promoted to full professor and becomes an attending physician at the VA Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.

1976

Dr. Mitchell becomes director of the Harry S. Moss Heart Center.

1982

Dr. Mitchell becomes the Frank M. Ryburn Junior Chair of heart research at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

1984

Dr. Mitchell receives the Award of Merit from the American Heart Association, Inc.

1988

Dr. Mitchell serves on the science advisory board of the U.S. Air Force.

1989

Dr. Mitchell becomes the Carolyn P. and S. Roger Horchow chair of cardiac research at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

1990

Dr. Mitchell joins the courtesy staff at Zale Lipshy University Hospital and is appointed National Vice President of the American Heart Association, Inc.

1991

Dr. Mitchell serves as a Percy Russo lecturer and professor at the Cumberland College of Health Sciences at The University of Sydney in Australia.

2000

Dr. Mitchell is presented with an honorary Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

2012

Dr. Mitchell wins the Paton Prize from the Physiological Society.

2017

Dr. Mitchell is honored with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and is named a Distinguished Humanitarian by Marquis Who’s Who.
