Dr. Thompson is born in Leicester, England to David and Alice Thompson.

1964

Dr. Thompson receives a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Cambridge.

1966

Dr. Thompson becomes a college lecturer in History at the University of Cambridge.

1968

Dr. Thompson receives a Master of Arts from the University of Cambridge.

1969

Dr. Thompson marries Margaret Clague and receives a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge.

1970

Dr. Thompson becomes a university lecturer at the University of Cambridge.

1972

Dr. Thompson authors “Nonconformity in the Nineteenth Century.”

1979

Dr Thompson is elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

1982

Dr. Thompson authors “Let Sects and Parties Fall.”

1986

Dr. Thompson receives a Bachelor of Divinity from the University of Cambridge.

1995

Dr. Thompson becomes the Director of the Center for Advanced Religious and Theological Studies at the University of Cambridge.

1996

Dr. Thompson serves as Moderator of the General Assembly of the United Reformed Church.

1998

Dr. Thompson serves as Moderator of the Disciples of Ecumenical Consultative Council.

2000

Dr. Thompson serves as President of the World Convention of Churches of Christ.

2001

Dr. Thompson is appointed Reader in Modern Church History at the University of Cambridge.

2002

Dr. Thompson becomes President of Fitzwilliam College at the University of Cambridge.

2005

Dr. Thompson authors “Baptism, Church and Society in Modern Britain.”

2007

Dr. Thompson becomes Professor of Modern Church History at the University of Cambridge.

Dr. Thompson becomes an Ecumenical Canon of Ely Cathedral.
