1952

Earns a Bachelor of Science from the Pennsylvania State University.

1954

Achieves a Master of Science in botany from the Pennsylvania State University.

1958

Obtains a Doctor of Philosophy from the Univ. of California, Davis; Is an instructor and assistant prof. at Montana State University through 1960.

1960

Marries Mary Margaret Maloney on Jan. 2; Is an assistant, associate and full prof. of botany at the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison through 1977.

1965

Is a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellow.

1971

Is a visiting professor at the University of Natal in South Africa.

1974

Receives the Alexander von Humboldt Award; Is a visiting professor at the University of Gottingen in Germany and again in 1988.

1977

Is a professor of botany and plant pathology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison until 1988.

1981

Receives the Emil H. Steiger Award for Excellence in Teaching from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Is a Bessey Lecturer at Iowa State University.
