1935

Born to Harry Joseph Beer and Elizabet Maria (Meister) Beer in Berlin, Germany.

1956

Earns a Bachelor of Science in physics, with honors, from the University of Manchester and is a research assistant in physics until 1960.

1960

Obtains a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from the University of Manchester and is a senior assistant in astronomy until 1963.

1960

Marries Margaret Ann Taylor on August 11; Is an honorary Turner and Newall Fellow through 1961.

1963

Arrives in the United States; Is a senior scientist at Jet Propulsion Laboratory until 1970.

1970

Serves the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a group supervisor of Tropospheric Sciences until 2005.

1972

Discovers extra-terrestrial deuterium (heavy hydrogen) in Jupiter.

1974

Earns the NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement for Jupiter Discoveries; Is a visiting assoc. professor of astronomy at UT Austin.

1975

Discovers carbon monoxide in Jupiter.

1979

Is a visiting astronomer at Kitt Peak National Observatory until 1981.

1980

Receives the NASA Group Achievement Award for Pioneer Venus.

1982

Is a visiting astronomer at Mauna Kea Observatory until 2010.

1985

Is a senior research scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory until retiring in 2009.

1986

Receives the NASA Group Achievement Award for Spacelab 3 ATMOS Experiment.

1990

Is the manager of the Atmospheric and Oceanographic Sciences Section at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory until 1992.

1992

Publishes “Remote Sensing by Fourier Transform Spectrometry.”

1997

Is a project scientist and principal scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory until retiring in 2009.

2004

Discovers global maps of atmospheric ozone and other pollutants through 2009.

2005

Receives the NASA Group Achievement Award for Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer.

2008

Is the recipient of the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal.
