A Timeline of Professional Milestones 

1942

Born to Anthony Macaulay Macleod and Dorothy Lillian (Amend) Macleod in Manila, Philippines.

1959

Attends Notre Dame through 1963, earns three monograms and captains swim team.

1963

Receives Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Notre Dame.

1963

Receives commission as officer in United States Army, serves on active duty through 1965 and then reserves through 1969.

1966

Attends Law School at Notre Dame through 1969, serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review.

1969

Is admitted to The District of Columbia Bar and joins Jones Day as an associate.

1969

Has a daughter, Kerry Anne Macleod.

1974

Becomes a partner at Jones Day.

1974

Has a son, John Newton (“Jack”) Macleod.

1979

Leaves Jones Day with others to found Crowell & Moring LLP and serves on its first Management Committee.

1979

Chairs Crowell & Moring’s Natural Resources & Environment Group through 2000.

1984

Serves as Chairman of Crowell & Moring LLP through 1985, again in 1993-1994, and again in 2000-2006.

1989

Marries Ann Renee Klee.

1995

Argues Sweet Home Chapter of Communities for a Great Oregon v. Babbitt in the United States Supreme Court.

1995

Receives the Distinguished Mining Lawyer Award from the National Mining Association.

2006

Is named Chairman Emeritus of Crowell & Moring.

2006

Opens Crowell & Moring’s New York office and subsequently opens offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

2010

Receives the Crowell & Moring Leadership Award.

2015

Retires from Crowell & Moring and the practice of law

2015

Adapts to retirement and begins to write books, including A Lawyer or a Priest (2016), Snippets (2018), and Jessie Macaulay (working title, in progress).
