Dr. Ackerman is born in Detroit, Michigan to John and Marie Hanjian.

1950

Dr. Ackerman receives a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from the University of Michigan.

1951

Dr. Ackerman receives a Master of Arts in anthropology from the University of Michigan.

1952

Dr. Ackerman marries Robert Edwin Ackerman on March 30th.

1960

Dr. Ackerman serves as a Russian translator at the Arctic Institute of North America in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

1963

Dr. Ackerman becomes an anthropology instructor at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington.

1979

Dr. Ackerman receives the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and a Fellowship from the American Association of University Women.

1982

Dr. Ackerman receives a Doctor of Philosophy in anthropology from Washington State University.

1982

Dr. Ackerman becomes an anthropology researcher at Washington State University.

1995

Dr. Ackerman co-edits “Women and Power in Native North America.”

1996

Dr. Ackerman edits and writes for “A Song to the Creator: Traditional Arts of Native American Women of the Plateau,” which includes essays by artists, both Indian and Euro-American authors, including Dr. Ackerman.

1996

Dr. Ackerman writes “Ethnographic Overview and Assessment of Federal and Tribal Lands in the Lake Roosevelt Area Concerning the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Indian Reservation.”

2001

Dr. Ackerman becomes an adjunct professor at Washington State University.

2003

Dr. Ackerman writes “A Necessary Balance: Gender and Power Among Indians of the Columbia Plateau.”
