1933
Dr. Tomlinson is born in North Dakota to Florence Marie and Aubrey Niles Short.
1957
Dr. Tomlinson receives a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Minnesota and is certified as a registered nurse by the California State Board of Nursing (now the California Board of Registered Nursing).
1971
Dr. Tomlinson is certified as a registered nurse by the Oregon State Board of Nursing.
1972
Dr. Tomlinson receives a fellowship from the National Institutes of Health as well as a fellowship in community mental health administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
1973
Dr. Tomlinson receives a Master of Science in nursing from the University of Washington and becomes an associate professor at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).
1984
Dr. Tomlinson receives a Doctor of Philosophy from Oregon State University.
1985
Dr. Tomlinson is certified as a registered nurse by the Minnesota Board of Nursing and becomes a professor at the University of Minnesota.
1995
Dr. Tomlinson serves as a visiting professor at the University of Bergen in Norway and receives the Award for Excellence in clinical research from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.
1996
Dr. Tomlinson serves on the board of directors and is appointed chair of the family health section of the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR).
1997
Dr. Tomlinson serves as a visiting professor at the National Yang-Ming University in Taipei, Taiwan.
2000
Dr. Tomlinson becomes an editorial board member and the U.S. National editor of the Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences.
2001
Dr. Tomlinson serves as a Fulbright visiting professor at the University of Tampere in Finland and earns the title of Professor Emeritus at the University Minnesota.
2005
Dr. Tomlinson is presented with an honorary Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Tampere.
2006
Dr. Tomlinson becomes a Senior Fulbright Scholar.
2009
Dr. Tomlinson receives the Nursing Alumni Award from the University of Minnesota.
2017
Dr. Tomlinson is honored with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who’s Who.
