A Timeline of Professional Milestones

1933

Dr. Berman is born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Henry and Ella Goldfisch Berman.

1951

Dr. Berman graduates from Washington High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and attends the University of Wisconsin.

1955

Dr. Berman receives a Bachelor of Science with high honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, majoring in chemical engineering.

1955

Dr. Berman works for Standard Oil of California in El Segundo, California. He is drafted in the U.S. Army after one year.

1955

Dr. Berman receives a direct commission as a Second Lieutenant USAR (Sanitary Engineer) and is sent for active duty to Puerto Rico.

1958

Dr. Berman is promoted to First Lieutenant and leaves active duty to attend the University of Texas at Austin.

1961

Dr. Berman receives a Master of Arts in mathematics and a Master of Science in chemical engineering from The University of Texas.

1962

Dr. Berman receives a Doctor of Philosophy from The University of Texas at Austin and becomes a member of Central Research at E.I. Du Pont in Delaware.

1962

Dr. Berman marries Sarah Ayers and is promoted to Captain in the USAR.

1962

Dr. Berman has his first scientific publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Over the next 50 years, he is published more than 50 times.

1964

Dr. Berman becomes an assistant professor at Arizona State University. He is promoted to full professor in 1970.

1966

Dr. Berman has his first presentation at a scientific meeting with many more to follow throughout his career.

1966

Dr. Berman has his first student obtain his/her graduate degree at Arizona State University, and a total of 49 follow during his career.

1976

Dr. Berman serves as a member of the Phoenix Air Quality Maintenance Task Force as a result of his research into air pollution.

1978

Dr. Berman serves as chair of the Arizona section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He also holds this position in 1988.

1980

Dr. Berman serves as chair of the Arizona Council of Engineering and Science Associations.

1984

Dr. Berman is honored by the Graduate College at Arizona State University as the Distinguished Research Professor for one year.

1989

Dr. Berman serves as president of the Arizona/Nevada Academy of Science.

2000

Dr. Berman becomes Professor Emeritus and joins the Emeritus College at Arizona State University.

2004

Dr. Berman joins the Guild at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona and volunteers in many capacities.
