1934

Born to Kenneth Warren Smith DVM and Nina Lou (Sykes) Smith in Logan, UT.

1956

Earns a Bachelor of Science from the University of Iowa.

1958

Marries Nancy Chesterman.

1959

Earns a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Iowa.

1959

Serves as an intern at Colorado General Hospital in Denver.

1960

Is a pathology resident at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City through 1965.

1965

Serves as lieutenant commander of the US Naval Hospital in Chelsea, MA, through 1967.

1967

Teaches as an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Vermont in Burlington.

1970

Teaches as a professor of pathology at Indiana University, now Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis, through June 1998.

1977

Receives the Outstanding Contribution to Clinical Microbiology Award from the South Central Association of Clinical Microbiology.

1981

Serves as chairman of the microbiology resource committee of the College of American Pathologists through 1985.

1992

Serves as the chairman of the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at Indiana University in Indianapolis through June 1998.

1997

Is named the Nordschow Professor of Laboratory Medicine at Indiana University, Indianapolis.

1998

Serves as a liaison for the AMPATH Program at the Moi University School of Medicine in Kenya and continues to do so.

1998

Joins Board of Directors of Indiana Medical History Museum and continues to do so.

2019

Earns the Ritchey Emeriti Faculty Service Award.
