1931

Dr. Furnas is born in Caldwell, Idaho to John Doan and Esther Broadbury Furnas.

1952

Dr. Furnas receives a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California Berkeley.

1955

Dr. Furnas receives a Doctor of Medicine from the University of California San Francisco and begins an internship at the University of California Hospital in San Francisco, California.

1956

Dr. Furnas becomes an assistant resident in surgery at the University of California.

1957

Dr. Furnas receives a Master of Science in toxicology and pharmacology from the University of California San Francisco.

1959

Dr. Furnas becomes an assistant resident in psychiatry at the National Institute of Mental Health and a fellow of the Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute at the University of California San Francisco.

1960

Dr. Furnas becomes a resident in general surgery at Gorgas Hospital in Panama City, Panama Canal Zone.

1961

Dr. Furnas becomes an assistant resident in plastic surgery at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

1962

Dr. Furnas is appointed chief resident in plastic surgery at the VA Medical Center of Cornell Health.

1963

Dr. Furnas becomes a registrar for the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Affiliated Hospitals in Scotland.

1964

Dr. Furnas becomes an associate in surgery and senior resident at the University of Iowa.

1966

Dr. Furnas becomes an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Iowa.

1968

Dr. Furnas is promoted to associate professor at the University of Iowa.

1969

Dr. Furnas becomes an associate professor of surgery and chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of California Irvine.

1974

Dr. Furnas becomes a full professor at the University of California Irvine.

1980

Dr. Furnas becomes a clinical professor at the University of California Irvine.

1987

Dr. Furnas receives the Senior Research Award from the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation.

1998

Dr. Furnas is named Physician of the Year by the Orange County Medical Association.

2002

Dr. Furnas becomes Emeritus Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of California Irvine.

2005

Dr. Furnas is named Alumnus of the Year from the University of California San Francisco Alumni Association.
