1945

Dr. Chiu is born in Kwangtung, China to Bud Yick and Lai Kwai Chiu.

1969

Dr. Chiu receives a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Missouri.

1973

Dr. Chiu marries Lilian Wah-Ying Shen.

1973

Dr. Chiu receives a Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University and begins a medical internship at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.

1974

Dr. Chiu becomes a resident of general surgery at Barnes Hospital.

1977

Dr. Chiu becomes a resident of plastic surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, New York.

1980

Dr. Chiu becomes a fellow of the NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, New York.

1981

Dr. Chiu becomes an assistant professor at the NYU Langone Medical Center and a supervisory attending at Bellevue Hospital Hand Clinic.

1989

Dr. Chiu is appointed associate director of plastic surgery and chief of hand/microsurgery and replantation surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

1990

Dr. Chiu becomes a professor of clinical surgery, anatomy, and cell biology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

1993

Dr. Chiu is appointed director of the Microsurgery Center at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

1994

Dr. Chiu is appointed chief of the Plastic Surgery Division of the Department of Surgery, and is named Thomas S. Zimmer Professor at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

1994

Dr. Chiu is the founding president of the Federation of Chinese American and Chinese Canadian Medical Societies.

2000

Dr. Chiu is named Calvin F. Barber Professor at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

2000

Dr. Chiu is appointed director of the Center of Restorative Surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

2001

Dr. Chiu becomes a clinical professor of surgery at New York University.

2003

Dr. Chiu is appointed director of the New York Nerve Center at the NYU Langone Medical Center.

2006

Dr. Chiu is appointed director of hand surgery services at the NYU Langone Center for Restorative Surgery.

2008

Dr. Chiu becomes a professor of plastic and neurosurgery at New York University.

2017

Dr. Chiu is honored with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who’s Who.
