Dr. Lewis is born in Hartford, Connecticut to Theodore and Lillian Lewis.

1957

Dr. Lewis graduates magna cum laude from Brown University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts.

1959

Dr. Lewis marries Eleanor Grace Levinson.

1961

Dr. Lewis receives a Doctor of Medicine from Harvard University.

1961

Dr. Lewis serves as an intern at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

1962

Dr. Lewis serves as a junior resident at Beth Israel Hospital.

1963

Dr. Lewis becomes a senior resident at University Hospitals of Cleveland.

1964

Dr. Lewis becomes a senior resident at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

1964

Dr. Lewis becomes a fellow of the University of Texas Southwestern Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

1966

Dr. Lewis becomes chief medical resident at Beth Israel Hospital.

1969

Dr. Lewis is appointed director of the Emergency Unit and Medical Outpatient Department at Beth Israel Hospital.

1970

Dr. Lewis authors “The Drug Experience: Data for Decision Making.”

1971

Dr. Lewis becomes a Sloan Foundation fellow at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.

1972

Dr. Lewis is appointed medical director of the Washingtonian Center for Addictions in Boston, Massachusetts.

1976

Dr. Lewis becomes director of the Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse at Roger Williams General Hospital, and director of the alcoholism and drug abuse program at Brown University.

1981

Dr. Lewis is appointed chairman of the Department of Community Health at Brown University.

1982

Dr. Lewis is appointed director of the Center of Alcohol and Addiction Studies and becomes a professor of medicine and community health at Brown University.

1987

Dr. Lewis becomes Donald G. Millar Professor of Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University.

1996

Dr. Lewis receives the Norman E. Zinberg Memorial Lecturer Award from Harvard Medical School.

2011

Dr. Lewis receives the Lifetime Achievement Award from the College of Behavioral Health Leadership.
