A Timeline of Professional Milestones

1941

Born in the historic Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL.

1946

Attends Saint Aloysius and Wicker Park grade schools and Tuley High School in Chicago. (H.S. Nickname: Canuck)

1960

Sails around the world by freighter, working on land and at sea.  Gains deeper perspective of the world.

1962

Undertakes arts and science coursework at Wilbur Wright College, Chicago.

1963

Serves as Student Teaching Assistant at Southern Illinois University (SIU) at Carbondale until 1969.

1966

Earns a B.A. in Geography and History at Southern Illinois University.

1969

Receives M.A. in Geography at SIU, Adviser: T. J. Denis Fair; serves as a Lecturer at the U of I., Chicago.

1973

Attains Ph.D. Geography, Faculty of Science at University of South Africa. Adviser: Prof. T. J. Denis Fair.

1973

Appointed as Lecturer at University of Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland (U.B.L.S., Roma, Lesotho).

1974

Appointed as the Head of Geography at the Swaziland Campus (Kwaluseni) of U.B.L.S. to build Department.

1974

Begins design of Facs. and Programs for emerging Department of Geography, Environmental Science, and Planning. Stage 1 realized, ‘79.

1974

Co-authors with T, J, Denis Fair, “Contained Urbanisation: A Case Study”.  S.A.G.J. Vol. 56., no. 2.

1975

Authors: “Spatial Model of Authority Dependency Relations in South Africa,” J Mod Af Stu CUP; Predicts peaceful end to Apartheid.

1980

Becomes the second Dean of Science at the University of Swaziland; works on expansion and organization of science and university at large.

1982

Continues to advance standards and opportunities for faculty and staff development at the U. of Swaziland (now, Eswatini).

1983

Co-authors with C. Bootsman, “A Model of Desertification in Swaziland” in Desertification Control, No. 9, December, UNEP (Nairobi).

1985

Resigns as Head of Geography and Dean of Science at the University of Swaziland to devote time to family and other matters.

1993

Faculty, Chicago Archdiocese Seminary College at Loyola U., Adjunct at Northeastern Il. U., and other local institutions until 2012.

2012

Retires from academia; recognized for 30+ yrs. of leadership in Africa and USA in the Catholic “Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults.”

2022

Informed by dependable South Africans that Messrs. Mandela, de Klerk, and Tutu read his 1975 article on the peaceful end to Apartheid.
