A Timeline of Professional Milestones

1929

Dr. Buxton is born in Medford, Massachusetts to Alfred Pierve, Jr. and Nancy Walsh Pierce.

1947

Dr. Buxton graduates from Bronxville High School in Bronxville, New York.

1951

Dr. Buxton graduates from Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York.

1952

Dr. Buxton receives a Master of Arts from the Teachers College at Columbia University in New York. She also receives general teaching credential for the state of Michigan and becomes a secondary school teacher at Grosse Pointe High School in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.

1953

Dr. Buxton becomes a member of the Grosse Pointe, Michigan chapter of the Junior League.

1954

Dr. Buxton becomes a language arts instructor and acting chair of the English department at San Francisco State University in California.

1956

Dr. Buxton serves as a French teacher in Bronxville, New York and as a classroom teacher at Saint David’s School in New York City, New York.

1957

Dr. Buxton receives teaching credential for the State of New York and becomes an English teacher at Scarsdale High School in New York.

1959

Dr. Buxton serves on the board of directors of United Way in San Francisco, California.

1962

Dr. Buxton receives a Doctor of Philosophy from the Teachers College at Columbia University.

1964

Dr. Buxton serves on the School Community Development Program and becomes a consultant for a pre-school program in San Francisco, California.

1966

Dr. Buxton becomes an assistant professor of elementary at San Francisco State University.

1969

Dr. Buxton trains teachers on desegregating classrooms in San Francisco and Sausalito, California, and creates the Bay Area Teachers’ Active Learning Center in San Francisco.

1973

Dr. Buxton receives general teaching credential for the state of California, joins the adjunct faculty at San Francisco State University, becomes an extension instructor at multiple universities, and director of the Teacher’s Active Learning Center. She also publishes articles on children’s language development.

1980

Dr. Buxton becomes certified in administrative services in the state of California and becomes a staff development coordinator in the Oakland Unified School District in Oakland, California.

1991

Dr. Buxton founds the international Straight Spouse Network and presents at international conferences for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gay (PFLAG), the Bisexuality Network, the Catholic Association of Lesbians and Gay Men, and Lesbian Parents International.

1994

Dr. Buxton publishes “The Other Side of the Closet,” as well as research articles on the impact on families when a member comes out. She also presents at professional conferences for the American Association of Family and Conciliation Courts and the American Psychological Association.

1996

Dr. Buxton serves on the board of directors of the Family Equality Council and on the editorial boards of the Journal of GLBT Studies and the Journal of Bisexuality.

2001

Dr. Buxton becomes the executive director of the Straight Spouse Network, while continuing to publish her work and present at conferences.

2013

Dr. Buxton receives the Evelyn Hooker Award as an Ally from Division 44 of the American Psychological Association.
