Dr. Steven Mitchell Stanley is born in Detroit, Michigan, to William Thomas Stanley and Mildred Elizabeth Stanley.
1963
Dr. Stanley graduates summa cum laude from Princeton University, where he receives a Bachelor of Arts.
1967
Dr. Stanley joins the faculty at the University of Rochester as an assistant professor, a position he held until 1969.
1968
Continuing his education, Dr. Stanley earns a Doctor of Philosophy from Yale University.
1969
Dr. Stanley goes on to serve with Johns Hopkins University as an assistant professor of paleobiology.
1971
Dr. Stanley earns the title of associate professor with Johns Hopkins University.
1972
Dr. Stanley becomes an Associate in Research with the Smithsonian Institute.
1974
Dr. Stanley earns the title of professor with Johns Hopkins University.
1979
Dr. Stanley publishes Macroevolution: Pattern and Process, which has received more than 2,000 literature citations.
1981
Dr. Stanley receives a Guggenheim Fellowship through the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
1986
Dr. Stanley publishes the first edition of his best-selling textbook Earth and Life Through Time, now in its seventh edition under the title Earth System History.
1987
Dr. Stanley is appointed as Chairman of the department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Johns Hopkins University.
1993
Dr. Stanley serves as president of the Paleontological Society.
1993
Dr. Stanley founds and is appointed chair of the Environmental Earth Sciences and Policy Master’s Program at Johns Hopkins University.
1994
Dr. Stanley is elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences.
2001
Dr. Stanley serves as president of the American Geosciences Institute.
2005
Dr. Stanley goes on to become a research professor with the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.
2006
Dr. Stanley receives the Mary Clark Thompson Medal from the National Academy of Sciences.
2013
Dr. Stanley is awarded the Penrose Medal by the Geological Society of America.
2016
Dr. Stanley is featured in the 12th edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.
