A Timeline of Professional Milestones

1962

Earns a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Alfred University.

1964

Earns a Master of Arts in clinical psychology from The George Washington University.

1966

Is an intern at Walter Reed General Hospital (now Walter Reed National Military Medical Center) in Washington, D.C. until 1967.

1968

Earns a PhD in clinical and community psychology, with minors in experimental and social psychology, from the University of Maryland.

1968

Serves as a Captain and Chief Psychologist within the U.S. Army until 1972.

1970

Receives national TV and newspaper coverage for his U.S. Senate testimony per his survey of drug abuse among military personnel in Vietnam.

1971

Is awarded a Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service from the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps-Vietnam.

1972

Becomes a Full-time Department of Psychiatry Faculty Member within the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, remaining until 1983.

1974

Serves as the Director of the Addicts and Families Program at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic until 1983.

1975

Serves as chairman of various review committees and task forces within the National Institute on Drug Abuse for a number of years.

1977

Becomes a consultant to the White House’s Office of Drug Abuse Policy, remaining until 1981.

1980

Is a member of 16 editorial boards including the American Journal of Drug & Alcohol Abuse, Family Process (1982-1999) and Psychosocial Stress.

1982

Is the Director of Research within the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic.

1983

Becomes a Tenured Professor and Director of the Division of Family Programs within the Dept. of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

1989

Is a visiting faculty member within the Department of Continuing Education of Harvard University Medical School.

1993

Is the Director of Research of the Division of Family Programs within the Dept. of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

1997

Becomes a Tenured Professor and Dean within the School of Professional Psychology and Social Work at Spalding University in Louisville, KY until 1999.

1999

Serves as Vice President for Academic Research and is named as a Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Spalding University.

2003

Receives the Cumulative Contribution to Family Therapy Research Award from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

2008

Is inducted to the Schenectady City School District Hall of Fame.
