1929

Dr. Whitesides is born in Gastonia, North Carolina to Thomas Edward and Ferne Whitesides.

1952

Dr. Whitesides receives a Bachelor of Science from Emory University.

1955

Dr. Whitesides receives a Doctor of Medicine from Emory University.

1960

Dr. Whitesides finishes orthopaedic surgery training at Washington University and becomes a Captain in the United States Air Force, stationed in Japan and the Philippines during the early Vietnam War era.

1962

Dr. Whitesides joins the Emory University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and becomes Chairman of the department.

1974

Dr. Whitesides serves as an Alan DeForrest Smith lecturer at Columbia University in New York City, New York.

1978

Dr. Whitesides serves as a McCarroll lecturer at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri.

1980

Dr. Whitesides receives the Kappa Delta Research Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Orthopaedic Research Society.

1980

Dr. Whitesides is elected as a director of the American Board of Othorpaedic Surgery, where he also served as Chairman of the Examination Committee for 10 years.

1984

Dr. Whitesides edits the Spine Section of Evarts “Surgery of Musculoskeletal System.” He also contributes the Cervical Spine Section.

1991

Dr. Whitesides becomes trustee of The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

2003

Dr. Whitesides receives the Leon Wiltse Award from the North American Spine Society.

2014

Dr. Whitesides receives the Arnall Patz Lifetime Achievement Award from the Emory Medical Alumnus Association.

2015

A thankful patient and multiple trainees create, by donation of $2,000,000, the Thomas E. Whitesides Jr. Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Emory University School of Medicine.
