1966

Receives a Bachelor of Science in engineering from Syracuse University.

1969

Receives a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Boston University School of Law.

1986

Sues in Germany for infringement of chemical patent; prevails against German company in proceedings before Federal District Court, Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.

1986

Mr. Buff’s value of litigation exceeds 5 million DM, and leads to additional licensing revenue of at least 10 million DM.

1988

Coordinates § 1337 action resulting in International Trade Commission order excluding domestic importation of infringing product by four foreign companies.

1990

Patents harmonic responsive EAS System, wins opposition at EPO Court of Appeals.

1990

Licenses EAS System to numerous companies for lump-sum fees of $10 million and annual royalties exceeding $7 million.

1993

Generates Patent Estate covering chemical and electro-mechanical inventions, guided estate through European Patent Office winning more than 40 oppositions.

1993

Also generates licensed estate to domestic and foreign companies for annual royalties exceeding $8 million.

1996

Generates patent estate covering a magnetomechanically actuated EAS System.

1996

Forms JV company providing for further development, manufacture and worldwide distribution of System, and sells company to JV partner for $50 million.

2003

Joins the President’s Advisory Council for Small Business.

2004

Becomes chair and managing partner of Ernest D. Buff & Associates, a respected law firm advocating for clients in Intellectual Property, Patent Practice and Trademark cases.

2004

Based in Bedminster, the Firm has 20 years of experience, focuses on client success.

Furthermore, the Firm is familiar with the courts throughout all of Somerset and Morris Counties, as well as the NJ Federal District Courts.

2019

Receives the Attorney of the Month Award from National Firm.
