A Timeline of Professional Milestones

1961

Earns a Bachelor of Arts in zoology from Wellesley College.

1965

Achieves a Master of Science from the University of Washington.

1966

Obtains a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Washington; Interns in mixed med/ped at Baltimore City Hospital until 1967.

1967

Is a medical genetics fellow, pediatrics assistant resident and pediatric endocrinology fellow at Johns Hopkins Hospital until 1972.

1972

Is an assistant professor to full professor in the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Washington until 1981.

1973

Becomes a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

1981

Becomes a fellow of the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Pediatrics.

1981

Is a prof. of med. genetics at the Univ. of BC until 2004; Runs the clinical genetics unit at Children’s & Women’s Hospital in Vancouver until 1990.

1990

Serves as pediatrics prof. and department head at the Univ. of British Columbia (BC) and British Columbia Children’s Hospital until 2000.

1994

Is inducted into the John Hopkins Society of Scholars; Becomes president of the American Society of Human Genetics.

1997

Becomes a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London; Is named an Officer of the Order of Canada the next year.

2001

Becomes a distinguished fellow of Christ’s College, Cambridge University in the UK; Is president of American Society of Pediatrics.

2004

Receives the Wellesley College Alumni Achievement Award.

2005

Is named prof. emerita by the Univ. of BC Dept. of Pediatrics & Medical Genetics; Becomes a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Science.

2009

Receives the Univ. of BC School of Medicine Lifetime Achievement Award and Univ. of BC Alumni Award for Outstanding Community Service.

2011

Becomes a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and president of the International Human Genetics Congress.

2013

Receives the Canadian College of Medical Genetics Founders Award for Excellence in Medical Genetics.

2015

Is inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.

2017

Receives the University of British Columbia Honorary Degree, Doctorate of Science.

2018

Receives the American College of Medical Genetics Lifetime Achievement Award.
