A Timeline of Professional Milestones

1931

Dr. Alper is born in Brooklyn, New York to Jacob Julian and Emma Ruth Alper.

1952

Dr. Alper graduates summa cum laude from the Harvard Medical School at Harvard University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts. He also receives the Detur Prize from Harvard University.

1956

Dr. Alper graduates cum laude from Harvard University, receiving a Doctor of Medicine and begins a medical internship at Boston City Hospital (now Boston Medical Center).

1957

Dr. Alper serves in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

1959

Dr. Alper becomes an assistant resident at Boston City Hospital.

1960

Dr. Alper studies in Sweden as a postdoctoral research fellow.

1961

Dr. Alper marries Natalie Carole Katz.

1962

Dr. Alper becomes a research fellow at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now Brigham and Woman’s Hospital) in Boston.

1964

Dr. Alper is certified as a diplomate by the American Board of Internal Medicine, becoming a research associate in medicine at Harvard Medical School and at the Boston Children’s Hospital.

1969

Dr. Alper becomes an associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.

1971

Dr. Alper becomes the science director of the Blood Grouping Laboratory and the Blood Research Institute.

1972

Dr. Alper becomes the science director of the Center for Blood Research at the Immune Disease Institute, Inc.

1975

Dr. Alper is promoted to full professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.

1989

Dr. Alper becomes a member of the adjunct faculty at The Rockefeller University in New York, New York.

1990

Dr. Alper receives the Merit Award from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health.

1993

Dr. Alper is appointed vice president of the Immune Disease Institute, Inc.

2017

Dr. Alper is honored with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and is named a Distinguished Humanitarian by Marquis Who’s Who.
