Dr. McCartney is born in Elmira, New York to James L. and Edith T. McCartney.
1952
Dr. McCartney receives a Bachelor of Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University.
1955
Dr. McCartney receives a Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University and begins a medical internship at Boston City Hospital for Medicine (now Boston Medical Center).
1956
Dr. McCartney serves in the U.S. Army.
1958
Dr. McCartney begins a residency in psychiatry at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C.
1959
Dr. McCartney begins another residency in psychiatry at the Institute of Living in Hartford, Connecticut.
1961
Dr. McCartney becomes an attending physician at Meadowbrook Hospital (now Nassau University Medical Center).
1964
Dr. McCartney becomes an associate attending psychiatrist at Nassau Hospital (now NYU Winthrop Hospital) and at North Shore University Hospital.
1972
Dr. McCartney is appointed director of psychiatry and of the Training and Education Department at North Shore University Hospital.
1973
Dr. McCartney becomes chief of liaison services at North Shore University Hospital.
1978
Dr. McCartney is appointed associate director of North Shore University Hospital.
1980
Dr. McCartney becomes psychiatrist-in-chief at The Miriam Hospital and joins the staff of Butler Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.
1980
Dr. McCartney becomes an assistant professor of psychiatry at Brown University.
1988
Dr. McCartney is promoted to associate professor at Brown University.
1989
Dr. McCartney is presented with an honorary Master of Arts from Brown University.
1998
Dr. McCartney becomes director of geropsychiatry at Lifespan Academy Medical Center in Providence, Rhode Island and earns the title of Associate Professor Emeritus at Brown University.
