Earns a Bachelor of Science in physics from the California Institute of Technology.

Is a field assistant and data analyst for WAE U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Crustal Studies Branch in Denver, CO until 1962.

Achieves a Master of Science in geophysics from the California Institute of Technology; Receives a Superior Performance Award from the USGS.
