Mr. McGowan is born in New York, New York to Frank Hugh and Evelyn McGowan.
1957
Mr. McGowan receives a Bachelor of Science in engineering from Yale University and becomes an engineer for American Electric Power Company Inc. in New York, New York.
1960
Mr. McGowan marries Rochelle Schiff and becomes a teacher for private high schools in New York.
1961
Mr. McGowan receives a Master of Science from the Institute for Teachers of Science and Mathematics.
1969
Mr. McGowan becomes a science administrator at the Washington University Center for the Biology of Natural Systems in St. Louis, Missouri.
1971
Mr. McGowan becomes trustee and vice president of the Institute for Environmental Education of the New York State Governor’s Task Force on Energy Problems.
1974
Mr. McGowan is appointed chair of the Subcommittee on Alternative Energy Sources for the New York State Governor’s Task Force on Energy Problems.

Mr. McGowan is appointed president of the Scientists’ Institute for Public Information.
1979
Mr. McGowan becomes an advisory committee member of the New York State Governor’s Task Force on Energy Problems.
1983
Mr. McGowan joins the Audit and Finance Committee and is appointed chairman of the New York State Governor’s Task Force on Energy Problems.
1987
Mr. McGowan is appointed chairman of the Radioactive Waste Committee and the Low Level Waste Management Committee of the New York State Governor’s Task Force on Energy Problems.
1995
Mr. McGowan is appointed president of Media Resource Service, Inc.
1996
Mr. McGowan joins the adjunct faculty of The New School and is appointed director of public understanding of science for the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
1999
Mr. McGowan founds The Gene Media Forum of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, where he serves as president.

Mr. McGowan is appointed director of the Science Program for University Undergraduate Liberal Studies at The New School.

Mr. McGowan joins the full-time faculty and is appointed chair of the Science, Technology, and Society Program at The New School.

Mr. McGowan joins the University Faculty Senate at The New School.

Mr. McGowan becomes a secretary for the University Faculty Senate at The New School.

Mr. McGowan is appointed chair of the Environmental Studies Program and becomes an associate professor in interdisciplinary science at The New School.
