Dr. Mixson is born in Skipperville, Alabama, to John Thomas and Sarah Myrtis Mathison.

Dr. Mixson graduates from Ozark High School as valedictorian.
1959
Dr. Mixson receives a Bachelor of Science from Troy University.
1959
Dr. Mixson becomes an English teacher at Dothan High School.
1963
Dr. Mixson receives a Master of Science from Auburn University.
1966
Dr. Mixson becomes an English instructor at Enterprise State Community College.
1968
Dr. Mixson is appointed chairperson of the English Department at Enterprise State Community College.
1972
Dr. Mixson receives a Doctor of Philosophy from Florida State University.
1981
Dr. Mixson is first appointed to the Ozark-Dale County Library Board, serves eight years, and is reappointed to the board in 1999.
1982
Dr. Mixson becomes English Department chairperson and instructor and assistant academic dean at Wallace State Community College in Dothan, Alabama.
1983
Dr. Mixson is appointed academic dean of Wallace State Community College in Dothan, Alabama.
1984
Dr. Mixson becomes a coordinator of the Professional Development Task Force for the Alabama Community College System.
1986
Dr. Mixson joins the advisory board of the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities of Auburn University.
1991
Dr. Mixson serves as interim president of Wallace State Community College in Dothan, Alabama.
1996
Dr. Mixson serves as interim president of Alabama Aviation and Technical College in Ozark, Alabama.

Dr. Mixson joins the Dale County Education Retirees Association.

Dr. Mixson joins the National Advisory Council of the College of Education of Auburn University.

Dr. Mixson joins the Development Leadership Team of the College of Education of Auburn University.

Dr. Mixson is named Outstanding Alumnus of the College of Education of Auburn University, Distinguished Educator of the College of Education of Florida State University, and Alumnus of the Year of Troy University.
