1935
Dr. Patrick is born in East Chicago, Indiana to John W. Patrick and Elizabeth Patrick.
1957
Dr. Patrick receives a Bachelor of Arts in history from Dartmouth College and begins his career as a social studies teacher at Roosevelt High School in East Chicago.
1962
Dr. Patrick becomes a social studies teacher at the University of Chicago Laboratory High School.
1963
Dr. Patrick marries Patricia Grant.
1965
Dr. Patrick becomes a research associate in the School of Education at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.
1969
Dr. Patrick receives a Doctor of Education in social studies from Indiana University and becomes an assistant professor at Indiana University.
1974
Dr. Patrick is promoted to associate professor at Indiana University and he co-authors “Toward Effective Instruction in Secondary Social Studies.”
1977
Dr. Patrick is promoted to full professor of education at Indiana University.
1986
Dr. Patrick is appointed director of the Social Studies Development Center and the ERIC Clearinghouse for Social Studies/Social Science Education in the School of Education at Indiana University.
1987
Dr. Patrick receives the Bicentennial Leadership Award for Contributions to the Bicentennial Commemoration of the U.S. Constitution from the Council for the Advancement of Citizenship.
1999
Dr. Patrick serves as a scholar in residence at the Pedagogical Academy of the University of Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
2001
Dr. Patrick serves as the content editor of the development of social studies standards for grades K through 12 in the Indiana Department of Education. He co-authors “The Oxford Guide to the United States Government.”
2002
Dr. Patrick receives the John W. Ryan Award for Distinguished Service in International Programs and Studies from Indiana University. He also authors “The Bill of Rights: A History in Documents.”
2003
Dr. Patrick co-authors “Civics Today.”
2004
Dr. Patrick earns the title of Professor Emeritus of Education at Indiana University and receives the Civic Education Award of the Center for Civic Education in California.
2005
Dr. Patrick co-authors “Constitutional Democracy in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania” and receives the Founders Civic Education Award from the Indiana State Bar Association.
2006
Dr. Patrick authors “Understanding Democracy” and “The Supreme Court of the United States: A Student Companion.”
2007
Dr. Patrick serves as a scholar in residence at the Center for the Constitution of James Madison’s Montpelier in Virginia.
2012
Dr. Patrick becomes an adjunct professor of civic education in the College of Education at Kansas State University.
2016
Dr. Patrick is co-author and associate editor of “American Governance.”
