Dr. Diethelm is born in Baltimore, Maryland to Oskar Arnold and Grace Diethelm.
1951
Dr. Diethelm marries Nancy Lee Lane.
1953
Dr. Diethelm receives a Bachelor of Arts from Washington State University.
1958
Dr. Diethelm receives a Doctor of Medicine from Cornell University and begins a medical internship, and later a residency, in surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
1964
Dr. Diethelm becomes an instructor at Weill Cornell Medicine.
1965
Dr. Diethelm becomes a research fellow at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now Brigham and Women’s Hospital) in Boston, Massachusetts.
1965
Dr. Diethelm becomes an assistant in surgery at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital.
1966
Dr. Diethelm becomes a research fellow at Harvard Medical School.
1967
Dr. Diethelm becomes a faculty member at the UAB Hospital.
1973
Dr. Diethelm becomes a full professor of surgery and the vice chairman of the Department of Surgery at the UAB Hospital.
1982
Dr. Diethelm is appointed chairman of the Department of Surgery at the UAB Hospital.
1987
Dr. Diethelm becomes the director of the American Board of Surgery.
1989
Dr. Diethelm is appointed president of the Southern Surgical Association.
1991
Dr. Diethelm is appointed president of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.
1993
Dr. Diethelm receives an honorary Doctor of Science from The University of Alabama.
1994
Dr. Diethelm becomes a member of the Residency Review Committee for Surgery with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
1997
Dr. Diethelm is appointed chairman of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
2000
Dr. Diethelm earns the title of Professor Emeritus in the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.
2017
Dr. Diethelm is honored with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who’s Who.
