Born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to Lester John and Dorothy Viola Burr.
1955
Receives a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master of Arts from Columbia University in 1956.
1959
Receives a Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia University and joins the adjunct faculty of Franklin and Marshall College.
1961
Becomes an assistant professor of philosophy at Hood College.
1963
Marries Marjorie Jean Bakirakis.
1964
Joins the faculty of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and is a full professor at the university.
1966
Appointed chairman of the philosophy department at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh until 1976 and again in 2000.
1971
Coedited with Milton Goldinger “Philosophy and Contemporary Issues” in nine revised editions until 2004.
1975
Serves as chapter president of the American Association of University Professors.
1976
Becomes assistant Dean of Letters and Science at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
1980
Co-edits “Handbook of World Philosophy: Contemporary Developments Since 1945.”

Becomes a member of faculty senate at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Receives the John McNaughton Rosebush Professorship at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
