Born in Musselburgh, Scotland.

1971

Attends George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh, Scotland for six years.

1977

Serves as team captain of the Scottish Schools Fencing Association.

1981

Receives an honorary Bachelor of Science from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and becomes a physiology PhD student at the University of Edinburgh Medical School.

1984

Becomes a research associate in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the Nephrology Research and Training Center of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

1986

Receives a Doctor of Philosophy in physiology from the University of Edinburgh.

1986

Becomes a postdoctoral research fellow at the Nephrology Research and Training Center.

1987

Becomes a research instructor and scientist I at the Nephrology Research and Training Center.

1988

Becomes an assistant professor in the Department of Physiology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana.

1993

Becomes a fellow of the Council on High Blood Pressure for the American Heart Association.

1995

Is promoted to associate professor at Tulane University School of Medicine.
